2004/03/10

LAGOS, March 9 (Xinhuanet) -- Liberian interim government Chairman Charles Gyude Bryant reiterated Tuesday that his country values its relations with China and adheres to the one-China policy.

Liberia supports China's reunification, Bryant said in Monrovia, the capital of Liberia, when receiving the credentials of China's new ambassador to Liberia, Lin Songtian.

Monrovia appreciates China's assistance over the years and its active role as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council in solving the issue of Liberia, Bryant said.

Liberia, which is facing with the task of post-war reconstruction, hopes to learn from China's experiences and standsready to cooperate with China in such areas as agriculture, health, resources and electric power.

Lin Songtian is the first Chinese ambassador to Liberia since the two countries resumed diplomatic ties in October 2003.

China severed its ties with Liberia twice in the past due to Monrovia's wrong stance on Taiwan. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were first established in February 1977.
