Hu Jintao Meets with Peruvian President Garcia
2009/11/13

On November 13, 2009, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with his Peruvian counterpart Alan Garcia in Singapore. Both sides exchanged in-depth views on deepening China-Peru mutually beneficial cooperation.

Hu said the year 2008 is of great significance in the history of China-Peru exchanges. The heads of state of China and Peru visited each other's country and reached broad consensus on deepening bilateral relations in all areas. In the past year, Sino-Peruvian relations have witnessed rapid development in an all-round way. In the political area, the two countries have witnessed increasing strategic mutual trust, frequent exchanges of high-level visits and very close parliamentary and party-to-party contacts, Hu added. In the economic and trade sphere, the two countries have also deepened their pragmatic cooperation, increased investment and signed a bilateral free trade agreement. A Chinese Navy fleet would also pay a good-will visit to Peru next month, he added. The development of China-Peru strategic partnership has taken a firm step.

Both China and Peru, Hu said, were facing the common task of countering the international financial crisis, developing their economies and improving their people's well-being. The deepening of the China-Peru strategic partnership conforms to the common interests of both countries and their people, Hu said. He said that in the next phase, both countries need to exert greater efforts in the following three aspects. First, enhance political mutual trust. Both sides should continue to support and coordinate with each other on issues concerning their respective interests and major international issues. Second, earnestly advance pragmatic cooperation. Both sides should take the implementation of the China-Peru free trade agreement as an opportunity to enhance mutually beneficial cooperation on economy, trade, energy, mining industry and infrastructure construction. The Chinese government encourages and supports competent Chinese businesses to carry out various forms of cooperation with Peru. Third, comprehensively promote the all-round, wide-ranging and multiple-level development of bilateral ties and consolidate and expand the social basis of their friendship.

Hu said that this year marked the 160th anniversary of the Chinese settlement in Peru, and the two peoples have forged profound friendship over years of friendly exchanges. China values its bilateral strategic partnership and traditional friendship with the Latin American country. China is ready to work with Peru to push the friendly cooperation of mutual benefit to yield more fruitful results for the benefit of both peoples.

Garcia said President Hu's state visit to Peru last year was a great success and the strategic partnership between the two countries has made significant progress. The two peoples enjoy profound friendship and Peru solemnly commemorated the 160th anniversary of the Chinese settlement in Peru. Peru congratulated China for its achievements in countering the international financial crisis and exploring the development path that suits its own national conditions. The signing and implementation of the free trade agreement, as well as the Chinese enterprises' economic and trade cooperation in Peru have contributed to the development of bilateral economic and trade cooperation, the Peruvian president said. Peru will create favorable conditions for the Chinese enterprises' investment in Peru. Peru warmly welcomes the Chinese Navy fleet's visit to Peru and is ready to work with China to advance their bilateral strategic partnership, Garcia added.

Ling Jihua, Wang Huning and Dai Bingguo attended the above activities.
