Hu Jintao Visits Nanyang Girls' High School and Changi Wastewater Treatment Plant

On the morning of November 13, 2009, Chinese President Hu Jintao who was paying a state visit to Singapore visited Nanyang Girls’ High School and Changi Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Upon arriving at the School, Hu’s vehicle fleet was warmly welcomed by the students and teachers. In front of the School’s main building, girl students wearing traditional Chinese apparel beat drums and gongs and performed lion dances and the student band played cheerful music to welcome Hu and other distinguished Chinese guests.

Hu first of all visited the school history exhibition in Siyuan Museum on the first floor of the main building where he carefully listened to the introduction of a student representative about school history, nodding from time to time with smile on his face. Later, at the Yuzhi Library on the second floor, he held talks with students who will study abroad very soon. He expressed wish that they will have a pleasant stay abroad, harvest more knowledge and get more inspirations from their overseas learning.

Via video, he also talked with students who are studying at the High School Affiliated to Fudan University of China. He asked them carefully about their stay and study in Shanghai and expressed hope that they will cherish this learning opportunity, make more friends, learn more about the Chinese culture in Shanghai and make contributions to promoting the friendly exchanges between China and Singapore. He presented the bilingual dictionary 800 Chinese Characters as a gift to Nanyang Girls’ High School.

Established in 1917, Nanyang Girls’ High School is a well-known school of Singapore exclusively for girls with about 1,600 students. At present, one class of its students is studying at the High School Affiliated to Fudan University in China.

After visiting Nanyang Girls’ High School, Hu visited Changi Wastewater Treatment Plant which is an important deep tunnel sewage system of Singapore and aims at promoting sustainable development, saving land, recycling water resource and protecting the environment. Built in 2008, the Plant covers an area of 32 hectares, processes 800,000 cubic meters of sewage on a daily basis and has a potential daily processing capacity of 2.4 million cubic meters. It boasts the biggest newwater plant in Singapore.
