Strengthening exchange and cooperation and promoting win-win development. On October 9, 2009, the World Media Summit, which was launched by the world-renowned media, opened in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. President Hu Jintao attended the opening ceremony and delivered an important speech. President Hu stressed that it is an essential choice for the media of different countries to share the same destiny with the people and keep up with the trend of the times. The media should commit themselves to the grand cause of promoting peace and development of mankind and enabling the countries in the world to: politically respect each other and have consultations on an equal footing; economically cooperate with each other and complement each other; culturally learn from each other and seek common ground while putting aside differences; on the security front trust each other and enhance cooperation; and in the area of environmental protection, help each other and make concerted efforts to advance the environmental protection cause, so as to create a better future for mankind. Li Changchun, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, also attended the opening ceremony. President Hu first extended sincere congratulations on the opening of the World Media Summit and a warm welcome to the participating friends on behalf of the Chinese government and people. Hu stressed the world is undergoing great development, transformation and adjustment. In the face of unprecedented opportunities and challenges, the world media should keep up with the trend of the times, join hands to march forward and make efforts to contribute to a harmonious world with lasting peace and common prosperity. In today's world, the radiating effect of the media to international politics, economy, society, culture and other areas is increasing and its influence over the thinking, work and life is deepening. The media should, based upon their respective features and advantages, widely spread the concept of peace, development, cooperation, win-win and tolerance; stick to such principles as equality, mutual trust, mutual benefit, win-win cooperation and common development so as to better conduct exchange and cooperation; and undertake their social responsibilities to ensure the truthful, accurate, comprehensive and objective spread of news information. Hu pointed out that several days ago the Chinese people celebrated the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. With the unremitting efforts over the past six decades, especially over the past three decades since the reform and opening up, both China and the Chinese people have witnessed historical changes. However, we must be sober-minded that China is still the largest developing country in the world and there is still a long way to go for China to build a high-level better-off society that benefits the over one billion population and realize modernization and common prosperity of the entire Chinese people. China, proceeding from its national specific situation, will continue to uphold the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics and push forward economic, political, cultural, and social development and ecological civilization in an all-round manner for the sake of development for the people and by the people and sharing development fruits by the people. China will unswervingly walk along the path of peaceful development and uphold the open strategy based upon mutual benefits and win-win cooperation. China insists on carrying out friendly cooperation with all countries in the world on the basis of the five principles of peaceful coexistence. Hu emphasized that in the course of advancing the reform and opening up drive and building the socialist modernization, the Chinese government always gives top priority to the development of media and encourages and supports the Chinese media to play important roles in different areas such as pressing close to the reality, life and people, innovating on concepts, contents, forms, methods, and means, increasing appetency, attraction, and inspiration, upholding social integrity, understanding social conditions and public opinions, guiding social hotspots, leading public emotions, doing well in supervision by public opinions, and guaranteeing the people's rights to be informed, to participate, to be heard and to oversee. We will, in accordance with relevant laws and regulations, continue to increase the openness of government affairs, strengthen information release, guarantee the legitimate rights and interests of foreign news agencies and journalists and provide facilitation for foreign media organizations in their reporting activities. We sincerely hope that the media in the world could make new contributions to increasing the world people's understanding of the Chinese people and consolidating and developing the friendship between the Chinese people and the people throughout the world. Liu Yunshan, Ma Kai and Dai Bingguo also attended the opening ceremony, which was chaired by Li Congjun, President of China's Xinhua News Agency, the host of the summit. The World Media Summit was themed "Cooperation, Action, Win-Win and Development" and was launched at the joint proposal of Xinhua News Agency, News Corporation, the Associated Press, Reuters, ITAR-TASS, Kyodo, BBC, Turner Broadcasting System and Google.
