Dai Bingguo Meets with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Steinberg
2009/09/29

On September 29, 2009, Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo met with visiting U.S. Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg in Zhongnanhai.

Dai said that China and the U.S. have conducted close communication, exchanges and cooperation since the Obama administration took office. China-U.S. relations have taken on a positive momentum of development. President Hu Jintao met again with U.S. President Barack Obama in New York several days ago after their London meeting in April, reaching new consensus on further advancing the positive, cooperative and comprehensive China-U.S. relationship in the 21st century. Both sides should well implement the consensus reached by the two heads of state and work together for the continuous and steady development of bilateral ties. China attaches great importance to U.S. President Barack Obama's visit in November. China will work with the U.S. to ensure this visit a success.

Steinberg said President Obama and the U.S. government attach great importance to U.S.-China relations, holding that a strong U.S.-China relationship is vital to both countries and the world at large. The U.S. side hopes to continue enhancing consultation and cooperation with China on a range of pressing global challenges and regional hotspot issues in joint efforts to push for the settlement of these problems. He said Obama considered his meeting with President Hu Jintao in New York last week had yielded good results and had given an impetus to bilateral ties. He said President Obama was looking forward to his China visit, and hoped it would promote U.S.-China relations.

Both sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern.
