On June 16, 2009, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met in Ziguangge, Zhongnanhai, with a joint parliamentary delegation from the Pacific island countries including Tonga, Micronesia, Fiji and Niue. During the meeting, Wen said in recent years, the relations between China and Pacific island countries have been developing continuously with fruitful cooperation and coordination in bilateral and multilateral areas. Wen said China respected the island nations' choice of development path based on their national conditions, as well as their efforts to safeguard state sovereignty and independence, promote economic and social progress and improve people's livelihood. China would continue offering economic and technological assistance to these nations and promote the fulfillment of the Millennium Development Goals, Wen said. He said that China and Pacific island countries should expand economic and trade cooperation to cope with the global downturn. "We should also increase our coordination in responding to climate change and other global challenges," Wen said, noting that this would help regional stability and sustainable development. The parliamentary members praised relations between their countries and China and expressed sincere appreciation for China's long-standing disinterested assistance. They hoped to further develop friendly cooperative relations with China and reiterated their countries' adherence to the one-China policy. |
