Wen Jiabao Arrives in New York for UN Meetings

On the morning of September 23, 2008, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived in New York for a high-level UN meeting for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the general debate of the 63rd UN General Assembly.

Wen will make a keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the high-level UN meeting for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to introduce China’s implementation of MDGs and its efforts to carry out South-South cooperation. He will also put forward proposals on addressing the issues of poverty and development through united efforts of the international community and announce the further actions to be taken by the Chinese government to push for the implementation of MDGs.

Wen will address the general debate of the 63rd UN General Assembly, elaborating China’s foreign policy and its positions and proposals on major international issues.

The premier is also expected to meet with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and foreign leaders, broadly engage with the U.S. people from all walks of life and deliver speeches on the Sino-U.S. relations. Wen will also meet with representatives from Chinese missions overseas, overseas Chinese, Chinese students and Chinese-funded institutions, as well as local media.

Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, who had arrived earlier, as well as Permanent Representative of China to the UN Wang Guangya, Chinese Ambassador to the U.S. Zhou Wenzhong and other officials greeted Wen at the airport.
