| Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Jieyi Attends PIF Dialogue Meeting | ||

On August 21, Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Jieyi attended the 20th Post-Forum Dialogue Meeting of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) in Niue on behalf of the Chinese government. Addressing the meeting, Liu said the Chinese government attaches importance to developing ties with Pacific island countries and keeps conducting friendly cooperation with these countries based on the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence. China supports the island countries' efforts to develop economy, improve people's livelihood and achieve sustainable development and is ready to maintain high-level visits and exchanges at other levels with these countries to build up political trust. China is also ready to expand exchanges and cooperation with the island countries on economy, trade, culture, education and health, continue to offer them assistance within its available resources and push forward friendly cooperative relations between both sides in a bid to promote regional stability and development. Liu also briefed on China's views and proposals on climate change, energy and food security, expressing the country's willingness to make contribution within its capacity to the efforts of the island countries in these areas. The island countries welcomed the Chinese government to send its representative to the dialogue meeting and appreciated China's disinterested assistance over the years to their economic and social development. They also made positive comments on China's precious support to them on regional and international affairs as well as on the issue of sustainable development and looked forward to making joint efforts with China to strengthen bilateral cooperation in a wide range of areas. Leaders of 15 PIF member states, as well as representatives from 14 PIF dialogue partners including the United States, Japan, the European Union, India and Indonesia attended the meeting. They discussed issues including the situation of island countries, climate change, energy and food security and fishery. |
