On June 13, 2008, Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister He Yafei accepted in Beijing a list of the second batch of 1000 tents donated by the Sri Lankan government to China's quake-hit region.

Sri Lankan Ambassador to China Karunatilaka Amunugama said the two peoples are close like brothers. The Sri Lankan government and people felt deep sorrow over the Wenchuan earthquake and expressed condolences and sympathy through various means to the Chinese government and people. The Sri Lankan president visited the Chinese embassy in Sri Lanka to express condolences and instructed the Sri Lankan foreign minister to be in charge of the aid work for China. Sri Lanka has donated additional 1000 tents to China and hopes to do its utmost for China's relief work in return for China's long-standing disinterested assistance and support. Amunugama expressed belief that under the leadership of the Chinese government, the Chinese people will surely conquer the quake disaster.

He, on behalf of the Chinese government, thanked for the additional 1000 tents donated by the Sri Lankan government. He said Sri Lanka, as a developing country, has overcome various difficulties to collect relief materials for China following the devastating earthquake, which deeply moved the Chinese side. He believed that the 1000 tents will certainly help many affected families to tide over difficulties as soon as possible. Under the strong leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and with the support of the international community including Sri Lanka, the Chinese people have confidence to overcome all hardships and rebuild their homes.

The whole Sri Lankan nation paid close attention to the rescue and relief efforts in the wake of the Wenchuan earthquake and Sri Lankan people from all walks of life including diplomats of the embassy in China made donations to the affected areas. The first batch of relief materials including tents, medical equipment and medicine donated by Sri Lanka have arrived in Chengdu. The second batch of tents will reach quake-hit Tianshui in Gansu in mid-June.
