Assistant Foreign Minister Zhai Jun Holds Talks with Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Mekdad

On July 21, 2008, Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Zhai Jun held talks with visiting Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad in Diaoyutai State Guesthouse.

Zhai said Syria is one the first Arab countries to establish diplomatic ties with the People's Republic of China. China appreciates Syria's persistent support on issues concerning Taiwan, Tibet, human rights and Beijing Olympic Games, said Zhai, expressing gratitude for the friendly assistance offered by Syria after the devastating earthquake that hit China's Sichuan province in May. China will as always support Arab countries including Syria in their just cause of resuming legitimate rights and interests and is ready to continue carrying out friendly exchanges and expand mutually beneficial cooperation with Syria. China also hopes that both sides can learn from each other experience on governing the country. Zhai also expressed China's willingness to strengthen consultations and coordination with Syria in international and regional affairs so as to push bilateral traditional friendly relations for greater progress in the new period.

Mekdad said Syria attaches great importance to ties with China and is ready to enhance cooperation on politics, economy, science and technology, culture and education.

Both sides also exchanged views on the situations in the Middle East and the Gulf region.
