Hu Jintao Meets with UN Secretary-General

On the afternoon of July 2, 2008, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with visiting UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon at the Great Hall of the People.

Hu said that in the new situation, the United Nations (UN), as the most universal, representative, authoritative inter-governmental international organization, shoulders increasingly important responsibilities for promoting world peace and development. China, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council and the largest developing country, was a firm supporter and important partner of the UN, Hu told Ban, pledging that the country would firmly safeguard the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, fully participate in UN work, carry out its due responsibilities and obligations and maintain close communication and coordination with the UN on major international and regional issues. Hu said China agreed to necessary and rational reform of the UN based on democratic consultation to enhance its authority and efficiency. China would continue its cooperation with the UN as well as support for Ban's work in a responsible and constructive manner.

Ban said China's achievements in developing economy and maintaining political and social stability have attracted worldwide attention. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China has significant constructive impact on major international and regional affairs.

The UN valued China's role in promoting world peace and development, Ban said, citing China's contribution to the six-party talks on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue and development in Africa. The UN hoped to strengthen cooperation with China to jointly tackle numerous and complicated problems faced by the world. The UN hoped China would play a bigger role in realizing the UN millennium development goals and addressing international challenges such as climate change and food security, Ban said.

Ban praised China's earthquake relief work and sincerely hoped that China would win the fight against the natural disaster and rebuild homeland soon. He spoke highly of the developments of China's preparations for the Olympic Games, expressing his confidence that the country would host the most successful Olympic Games in history. He also wished the Beijing Olympic Games a great success. The UN would continue to adhere to the one-China policy, Ban added.

Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, Permanent Representative of China to the UN Wang Guangya and other officials attended the meeting.
