President Hu Jintao Holds Talks with Visiting Mongolian President
2004/07/06

On the afternoon of July 5, Chinese President Hu Jintao held talks in the Great Hall of the People with his Mongolian Counterpart Nachagyn Bagabandy. The two sides exchanged views on bilateral relations and issues of common interest and reached broad consensus.

Hu said China and Mongolia are friendly neighbors. With the concerted efforts of the two countries, bilateral relations have witnessed new progress in recent years. Politically, China and Mongolia always respect each other's independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity as well as the development path they have chosen in light of their own national conditions. The two sides have jointly established a good-neighborly partnership with mutual trust. Economically the two countries have been actively seeking and expanding bilateral reciprocal cooperation which turns out to be so effective that bilateral trade volume hits one record high after another. The two sides have also maintained good communication and cooperation in international and regional affairs. We appreciate and thank Mongolia for its adherence to the one-China policy and its understanding and support for China on the Taiwan issue.

Bagabandy said it is the first and foremost task for Mongolia to develop a long-term and stable cooperative relationship of equality, mutual benefits and good-neighborliness with China in Mongolia's external policies. We are very pleased and satisfied with the rapid developments of Mongolia-China relations in politics, economy, culture, education and national defense. He reiterated that Mongolia upholds the one-China policy.

Hu noted that this year marks the 10th anniversary of the amendment of the Treaty on China-Mongolia Friendly and Cooperative Relations as well as the 55th anniversary of the establishment of China-Mongolia diplomatic relations. We would like to take this opportunity to push forward bilateral relations for better development along with the Mongolian side in the following four areas. First, we need to stick to the overall orientation of good-neighborly partnership of mutual trust and maintain the momentum of exchanges between top leaderships. The two sides should augment exchanges at party, parliamentary and governmental levels so as to enhance understanding and deepen mutual trust. Second, both sides should expand and deepen economic and trade cooperation with a particular focus on resources development and infrastructure construction, step up efforts to implement the already negotiated cooperative projects between the two sides and continuously expand new channels for cooperation so as to pursue mutual benefit and common development. Third, both sides should strengthen bilateral exchanges and cooperation in culture, education, environmental protection and tourism and expand friendly exchanges between the two peoples in a bid to lay a more solid foundation for development of bilateral ties. Fourth, both sides should intensify their communication and coordination in international and regional affairs, jointly safeguard peace and stability of the region and promote regional cooperation.

Bagabandy thought highly of and fully agreed to Hu Jintao's important proposals on further pushing forward bilateral ties and appreciated the friendly support and assistance that China has offered to Mongolia. He indicated that his country would like to work with China to comply with the principles defined in a range of documents the two sides have signed, implement the important consensus reached between the leaders of the two countries and expand and deepen bilateral exchanges and cooperation in politics, economy, energy resources development, environmental protection and culture so as to continuously consolidate and develop China-Mongolia good-neighborly partnership of mutual trust.

The two sides also exchanged views on international and regional situations and other issues.

Following the talks, the two heads of state attended the signing ceremony of the Agreement on Economic and Technical Cooperation between China and Mongolia and other documents.

Prior to the talks, President Hu Jintao held a welcoming ceremony for President Bagabandy's visit to China at the North Hall of the Great Hall of the People. Present at the ceremony were President Hu Jintao's wife Liu Yongqing, Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) He Luli, State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan, Vice Chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Li Guixian, Vice-Chairman of the Central Committee of China Zhi Gong Party (Public Interest Party) Du Yijin, Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing and Minister of Commerce Bo Xilai.
